500 turn out for May procession

The city of Blackburn played host recently to over 500 people walking in a Marian Procession. Following on from the success of the procession last October at the south end of the diocese, this walk and others like it are heralding a new growth in popular piety that enkindles faith and gives a powerful witness.
Fr John Dugdale, who was responsible for the event, was pleased with the turnout and expressed his hope that the faith of many around would be uplifted by the joyful occasion.

The future of catechesis in the Diocese of Salford is in good shape.
On Saturday 12th May, prior to the celebration of Evening Prayer of the Church in Salford Cathedral, Canon Anthony McBride, Episcopal Vicar for Formation, presented thirteen students from parishes in the diocese with their certificates on completion of the Maryvale Certificate in Catechesis.

Ada Lee, housekeeper for many years in the diocese, has been awarded the Benemerenti medal. The medal, given by the Pope in gratitude for the service of Catholics in the local church, was presented by Bishop Mark Davies of Shrewsbury at a special Mass.
Eucharistic Congress: Archbishop hopeful

The forthcoming Eucharistic Congress, to be held in Dublin next month, will look to inspire within the Church in Ireland and the world a spirit of healing, renewal, and reconciliation that is founded upon the Body of Christ.
The Congress will take place between 10th and 17th June. Bishop Brain will be leading a group of pilgrims from our own diocese.

Phyllis Bowman, the first national director of the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, has died. She was 85. Mrs Bowman led the growth of the first pro-life organisation of its kind, from its beginnings in 1967.
Speaking of Mrs Bowman, the Archbishop of Westminster, Vincent Nichols, said, "I wish to pay tribute to the many years of generous service and the unfailing witness which Phyllis gave to the promotion of the dignity of human life and her unequivocal commitment to the legal protection of human life from the moment of conception until natural death.

David Cameron will not be able to exempt the Churches from a duty to offer marriages to homosexual couples, a specialist in religious discrimination law has said.
Neil Addison, a barrister and the director of the Warrington-based Thomas More Legal Centre, said that the Prime Minister’s assurances to the Church that they would not be compelled to perform religious marriage for gay couples are worthless.

The Pope gives a message for Vocations Sunday (4th Sunday of Easter) each year. This year, he speaks about the theme "Vocations, the Gift of the Love of God". In it, he says: “It is in this soil of self-offering and openness to the love of God, and as the fruit of that love, that all vocations are born and grow. By drawing from this wellspring through prayer, constant recourse to God’s word and to the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, it becomes possible to live a life of love for our neighbours, in whom we come to perceive the face of Christ the Lord (cf. Mt 25:31-46).”

The Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Mennini, addressed the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales on St George's Day. He asked bishops for their generosity in supporting the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham, and said that the recent pastoral letter in defence of marriage was "a good start".
