I want to get married in the Catholic Church but my fiancée is not Catholic. What should I do? |
First you should go and speak to your parish priest. He will guide you through the procedures to follow. There will be some form of marriage preparation to undergo and this would normally address the question of the joys of marriage and challenges that might arise from your not sharing the same faith. There will also be some paperwork to complete.
Your parish priest is the priest of the parish where you – the Catholic party – now live. He is not the priest of the parish where you were brought up or of the place where you might now go to Mass. It is your parish priest’s responsibility to prepare you for marriage, even if you intend to get married elsewhere.
If your fiancée is Christian, but not a Catholic, your parish priest will give you the necessary permission. If she is not baptised then you will require a dispensation from the impediment of disparity of cult. Again, your priest will guide you through the process, but please ensure you arrange to see him with plenty of time before the marriage to complete the extra paperwork, a good three months prior to the wedding is recommended.
In all this, your parish priest will help you and arrange the details; you have no need to worry about remembering too much in the initial stages!
