Letter from the Bishop of Salford to all those involved in safeguarding

Dear Safeguarding Representative,

I am delighted to be able to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to each of you for accepting to work with me in our endeavours to keep the obligation– to respect the person of every child and vulnerable adult – at the forefront of the minds of everyone in the Catholic Community. Safeguarding our children and vulnerable adults is at the heart of the church and that’s why the work you undertake is invaluable.

Valuable though your work is, there will be times when it will be challenging and even frustrating trying to get the parish engaged. Persevere in your efforts to weave safeguarding policy into everyday practice so that it becomes “second nature” to the parish. Remind yourselves that you are not alone; you are part of an army of volunteers in every Deanery, with the Diocesan Safeguarding Office ready and willing to stand with you when you need their support.

This resource pack is the expression of that support and is designed to help you build your confidence in your role, by providing you with all the relevant information to carry out your role. I really hope you find it useful.

Once again, my thanks for being willing to collaborate with me and with the Safeguarding Commission in this service to the Church. May you find great joy in it.

With every good wish and my blessing,

+ Terence J. Brain

Bishop of Salford
