International flavour at Sunday Mass |
Monday, 21 November 2011
Many Catholic parishes are enriched by the presence of people from different countries and Our Lady of Grace in Prestwich is no exception. Some 28 nationalities are to be found in the parish.
On Sunday 20th November, the feast of Christ the King, the 11 o’clock Mass at Our Lady of Grace was a truly international celebration. The opening hymn set the tone: “Let us build a house … All are welcome in this place.” Readings and prayers were said in English, Greek, Polish, Spanish, Shona, Malayalam, Italian, German, French and Irish, with the Creed sung in Latin.
Zimbabweans living in and near Manchester regularly celebrate Mass at Our Lady of Grace. They came on Sunday with choir and drums. Italians in national costume brought up the gifts. After Communion Indian parishioners sang hymns in Malayalam.
Festivities continued in the parish hall after Mass. People had brought food of their own countries to be shared by all. A display of Indian dancing rounded off a memorable celebration.

Youngsters enjoy themselves at Our Lady of Grace.
