Office for Evangelisation |
The Church’s task of evangelisation finds its roots in scripture, in the person of Jesus Christ and was mandated anew by the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965).
The Church professes Jesus Christ as the Good News for all people. At the moment of his ascension into heaven, Our Lord gave his Church ‘the great commission’, commanding his disciples to take the good news to the ends of the earth: “Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And know that I am with you always, yes, until the end of time” (Matthew 28,19-20).
Pope Paul VI, in his great encyclical Evangelii Nuntiandi (“On Evangelisation in the Modern World”), taught that for the Church, evangelising means bringing the Good News to all humanity, and through its influence, transforming humanity from within and making it new.
The Department for Evangelisation is mandated to build among the people of the Diocese of Salford an enthusiasm for their faith, so that in living out their faith in Jesus Christ, they freely share it with others. The Department assists the Bishop by helping to form Catholics in the diocese as evangelisers. Through the various Offices in the Department, we seek to educate, train and form Catholics in the task of evangelisation. In short, the Department tries to help people grow in faith, personal holiness of life and witness to the Gospel, thereby enabling them to transform society.
In order to do this we provide resources and offer courses and events for the diocese, parishes and deaneries.
