Seeing is believing
“Seeing is believing”, someone once wrote. And indeed the Second Vatican Council reminded us that the revelation which God brings us is seen in gestures and words of equal importance (Dei verbum 2). Here is the story of that revelation being seen in signs of God and His command “Ephphata”, or “be open”, an invitation not only to the Church, but to the world as well. St Joseph’s Mission to Deaf People stands within Salford Diocese as a servant of the Bishop in his pastoral outreach and care to those for whom Sign Language is their first language. Yet we are also a servant of the universal Church, faithful to the Lord’s command to go and teach all nations of all languages and all cultures. At the heart of our mission is that firm command, “that they may see!”
