The Church, too, must be a family, bishops, priests, deacons, religious and laity, supporting each other and sharing with each other the individual gifts given by God.

What is the religious life?

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintEmail

Religious life is a particular way of living out the grace of one’s baptismal call to holiness. It is a life of consecration to God through publicly-made vows, usually of chastity, poverty and obedience, in a specific Religious Congregation or Order. Each Order has its own way of following Christ, the chaste, poor and obedient Son of God, who was sent by the Father to be the living example of holiness.

The Church requires that the person making the vows be an adult making a free, non-coerced and informed commitment, that he or she is not already bound by other commitments (e.g. marriage), that he or she has the ability to undertake the way of life lived by the Order he or she seeks to join, and is accepted by the Order to make vows, thus becoming one of its members.

The Diocese of Salford has been blessed with many congregations of religious. Some, such as the Franciscan Missionaries of St Joseph (Rescue Sisters) and the Sisters of the Cross and Passion, were born in the diocese. They are a living witness to the power of God to work miracles in the lives of ordinary men and women.

If you would like to find out more about the religious life, please get in touch directly (see the directory) or else by contacting the diocese through this website.
