“Be who God wants you to be and you will set the world on fire”. St Catherine of Siena
Youth ministry seeks: ‘to empower young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today’, (Renewing the Vision: A Framework for Catholic Youth Ministry, paragraph 9) ‘to draw young people to responsible participation in the life, mission and work of the Catholic faith community’, (RTV 11) and ‘to foster the total personal and spiritual growth of each young person’. (RTV 15) As the Patron Saint for Youth in our Diocese, we therefore echo the words of St Catherine of Siena to all young people: “be who God wants you to be and you will set the world on fire.”
As you can see, we now have a diocesan prayer and youth logo based on some of the suggestions made by the young people at the 2017 Palm Sunday celebration. It would be great if you could use the prayer and the logo and share it in as many ways as possible.
We have been looking at setting up structures to help communicate and support youth events within the parish, the deanery and the Diocese. Hopefully you will be aware that we are asking each parish to have a young person as their parish rep. We had a very successful training day where a number of parish reps were commissioned. It is hoped that with the support of the deanery reps they will work together as a deanery and support each other in parish clusters to communicate what is going on for young people and create opportunities for young people to be involved in the life of the parish, the deanery and the Diocese.
We wanted a structure within the Diocese where those people who are involved within youth ministry in and around the diocese are represented. This would create opportunities to share ideas and act as a soundboard for initiatives within the Diocese. These meetings are becoming increasingly useful as people share news, ideas and resources. This creates the opportunity in having a shared vision of what Youth Ministry is within our Diocese and how we can work together to support our young people.
