JOB TITLE: SACRISTAN

ACCOUNTABLE TO: PARISH PRIEST

Main purpose of post:

  1. To recruit, select and prepare individuals for the role of altar servers and colunteers working with the sacristan.
  2. To identify and lead fundraising activities that support both social and professional development.
  3. To support the clergy with the preparation for special services e.g. Youth Mass, Mass for the Sick, Easter and Christmas celebrations.

Main duties:

  1. Name contact for anyone wishing to be an altar server / volunteer.
  2. To undertake a risk assessment for altar servers and colunteers and manage identified risks.
  3. Meet with child and parent / guardian to discuss role and responsibilities.
  4. Mainatain a waiting list and encourage the child and parent / guardian to observe the altar server's role until a place becomes vacant.
  5. All new altar servers / parents / guardians to receive
    1. Letter for parent / guardian explaining policies and procedures with a return slip to be signed by same and returned to sacristan. This is to be kept in a secure file.
    2. Pamphlet for altar servers explaining role.
  6. Produce and display rota for altar servers.
  7. Altar servers to report to sacristan 15 minutes prior to commencement of service.
