4 easy steps

  1. Let the people in the parish know who you are, and what the role is about:
    • Put a note in the newsletter (who, why, what).
    • Say a few words after Mass.
    • Put up posters at the back of the church and hall.
  2. Gather in formation on all relevant volunteers and document the details in a "Volunteer Record Book".
    • Ask the priest for a list of the activities that happen in the parish.
    • Ask other volunteers about activities in the parish.
    • "Call in" on different relevant activities and introduce yourself.
  3. Ensure all relevant volunteers are aware of and supportive of our safeguarding policies.
    • Meet the volunteers at the start or end of their activitiy and share with them our code of counduct (volunteer and child) and our policies on:
      • Acceptable behaviour;
      • Responding to allegations;
      • Creating a safe environment, using and relevant guidance notes.
    • Meet the leader of each relevant activitiy and hand them a copy of the policies. Ask them to talk them through with all volunteers and to contact you again if they have any questions.
    • Bring all volunteers together at a specifies date and time for a coffee and discuss all policies.
  4. Keep up-to-date with any changes in volunteers and ensure policies are always adhered to.
    • Ask "leaders" to contact you if anyone leaves or joins.
    • "Check in" on activities with volunteers so that they contact you for support
      • Quick chats after Mass;
      • Informal coffees;
      • Brief phone chats every now and then.
