In our house there is light

Send your light and fidelity, that they may be my guide and bring me to your holy mountain, to the place of your dwelling… (Psalm 43,3).

When a candle burns in a room, it not only looks good, but it creates a special atmosphere. A glowing warmth surrounds us. You get the feeling that someone is expecting us, something is being prepared for us. We feel good, and we feel at home.

When we light a candle in our needs or petitions, it is like a prayer. We remember the words and promise of Jesus: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8,12). In all our troubles and struggles, the Lord is there to lighten our path and to carry us safely.

In every Church, a candle burns every day – it is called the sanctuary lamp. It gives a powerful message: Jesus Christ is here! He is waiting for you. He wants to share with you his grace, his healing and love and be the light of your life.

What you can do as a family

Perhaps you could place a candle or a tea-light in a holder near the crucifix or picture of Our Lady at special times: times of celebration and joy, times of worry or concern. The candle could be lit when the family comes together to say a little prayer or getting ready for bed at night time. Don’t forget to blow the candle out when you’re finished. Don’t leave it unattended.
