Bishop John celebrating Mass each Sunday in lockdown

Monday 20th April 2020

Bishop John will be celebrating the 11am Mass each Sunday during the remainder of the lockdown as a diocesan call to solidarity and prayer during the pandemic.

Over the last few weeks, livestreams of services from Salford Cathedral were viewed by over 10,000 people across the Easter Weekend, with viewers tuning in from more than 50 different countries. On average, each Mass has had a virtual attendance of around 1,500, and around the diocese parishes have also been streaming their Masses.

Bishop John said: “I think one thing we have got to remember is that Church is an important place and an important symbol and it’s great when we can gather there together.  But, Jesus didn’t have churches and he told us we were all part of the church and we could be Christian without a church building.”

As well as Bishop John’s Sunday Masses, the Bishops’ Conference will be showing a spiritual solidarity by holding a weekly Mass, every Thursday at 7pm, to show spiritual solidarity with those who are sick and their families, NHS Front line workers and those working in social care.
