Fr Anthony Petty Obituary

We are very sorry to share the sad news that Fr Anthony Petty died on 1st January.

Father Petty was in his eighty fourth year, the sixtieth year of his Sacred Priesthood. May he rest in peace.

Anthony was born on 3rd June 1938 in Reddish and was baptised at St Joseph’s, Reddish. He was educated at St Joseph’s, Reddish, St Winifred’s Convent, Heaton Mersey and Xaverian Prep School and College, Manchester.

Anthony was accepted as an Ecclesiastical student for the Diocese of Salford in July 1951 and continued at Xaverian, transferring to St Bede’s College in 1954 and then to St Joseph’s College, Upholland in September 1956.

Fr Anthony Petty was ordained to the Priesthood at the Cathedral Church of St John the Evangelist, Salford  on 16th June 1962.

Fr Petty served the Diocese of Salford in the following appointments:

1962-1970:       St. Malachy’s, Collyhurst               Assistant Priest

1970-1977:       St. James the Less, Rawtenstall    Assistant Priest

1977-1979:       St. Robert’s, Longsight                  Assistant Priest

1979-1984:       HM Forces Army Chaplain serving in UK, NI and Germany

1984-1990:       Our Lady and Lancashire Martyrs, Little Hulton      Assistant Priest

1990-2014:       Holy Family, Reddish                                             Parish Priest

Fr Anthony retired in November 2014.

Bishop John will celebrate a Memorial Mass at Holy Family, Reddish on Tuesday 1st March at 12 noon.
