Fr James Austin RIP Obituary

We are sorry to share the sad news that Fr James Austin died peacefully on 12 February at Little Sisters of the Poor Care Home in Longsight.

Fr Austin was in his ninety second year, the sixty first year of his Sacred Priesthood.  May he rest in peace.

James was born on 30th May 1929 in West Didsbury, Manchester and was baptised at English Martyrs, Whalley Range in June 1929. He was educated at St Ambrose; St Bede’s College; Manchester University and then Birmingham Institute for Teaching.

James was accepted as an Ecclesiastical student for the Diocese of Salford in June 1954 and studied at St Joseph’s College, Upholland.

Fr James Austin was ordained to the Priesthood at the Cathedral Church of St John the Evangelist, Salford on 11th June 1960.

Fr Austin served the Diocese of Salford in the following appointments:

 

1960-1978:     Upholland College                             Staff

1978-1983:     Cotton College, Staffordshire             Rector

1983-2002:     English Martyrs, Whalley Range       Parish Priest

2002-2003:     English Martyrs, Whalley Range       Pastor Emeritus

2003-2009:     Little Sisters of the Poor, Longsight   Chaplain

 

Fr Jim retired in 2002 and initially resided at English Martyrs before moving to Little Sisters of the Poor Care Home in Longsight where he served as chaplain until 2009.
