Obituary and funeral details Fr John McNamara RIP

It is with great sadness that we announce that Fr John McNamara died peacefully on Saturday evening.

Fr McNamara was in his ninety first year, the sixty fourth year of his Sacred Priesthood.

John was born on 4th June 1931 in Farnworth, Bolton and baptised on 28th June at St. Gregory’s Church, Farnworth. He was educated at St. Gregory’s Elementary School and De La Salle College, Pendleton.

John was accepted as an Ecclesiastical student for the Diocese of Salford in September 1952 and studied at St. Cuthbert’s College, Ushaw. Father John McNamara was ordained to the Priesthood at Our Lady of Lourdes, Farnworth on 27th July 1958.

Fr McNamara served  the Diocese of Salford in the following appointments:

1958-1964:  St. Edmund’s, Little Hulton   Assistant Priest

1964-1971:  St. Hugh of Lincoln, Stretford  Assistant Priest

1971-1974: St. Columba’s, Tonge Moor, Bolton   Assistant Priest

1974-1977: Immaculate Conception, Haslingden  Assistant Priest

1977-1995:  St. Charles, Rishton   Parish Priest

1995-2009: Ss. Peter and Paul, Bolton  Parish Priest

In 2009, Fr John retired.

Fr McNamara was for very many years a very active member of the Council of the Salford Catholic Truth Society. He was a director and trustee and from 2001 to 2010 the president

Bishop John will celebrate the Requiem Mass at St. Edmund’s Church, Bolton on Tuesday 5th April at 12.00
