Fr Lionel Devany RIP Obituary

We are sad to announce the news that Fr Lionel Devany died peacefully this morning.

Please remember him in your prayers and in the celebration of Mass. May he rest in peace.

Lionel was born on 10th October 1935 in Crumpsall and was baptised on 5th November 1935 at St Chad’s, Manchester. He was educated at St Anne’s Elementary, Crumpsall and Xaverian College, Manchester.

Lionel was accepted as an Ecclesiastical student for the Diocese of Salford in July 1953 and studied at Osterley College, transferring to St Joseph’s College, Upholland in September 1956.

Fr Lionel Devany was ordained to the Priesthood at the Cathedral Church of St John the Evangelist, Salford  on 16th June 1962.

Fr Devany served the Diocese of Salford in the following appointments:

1962-1967:     St. Willibrord’s, Clayton                     Assistant Priest

1967-1974:     St. Patrick’s, Oldham                         Assistant Priest

1974-1981:     Guardian Angels, Bury                       Assistant Priest

1981-1989:     Holy Family, Denton                           Parish Priest

1989-2019:     St. Joseph’s, Irlam                             Parish Priest

Fr Lionel retired in 2019 and resided at Nazareth House Care Home where he also served as chaplain
