Hear the Cry of the Poor

Sunday 18th November 2018

On the Second World Day of the Poor Pope Francis asks us to ‘Hear the Cry of the Poor.’ He has made it an annual day in the Churches calendar and this year we mark it on the 18th November.

You can read the full message from Pope Francis here.

This day gives us a chance to pause, to take a breath and think about what we can do for those around us, who maybe are not as lucky as we are. Be that in the gifts and food that we can buy or the family and friends we can spend the festive period with. We should forget that we are more fortunate than many. On this World Day of the Poor spend some time thinking what you can do to help someone in your community.

What can you do to help in your community? Caritas has opportunities to get involved or to make a donation to help local charities make a difference.

Here in the Diocese of Salford we are also using the opportunity of World Day of the Poor to celebrate all the volunteers of Caritas and the other charities of the Diocese, who give up their time, and use their gifts and talents to help those in need.  Caritas, Diocese of Salford is our sister charity and runs organisations like Cornerstone, The Lally Centre and the St Joseph Befriending Service. It has over 700 volunteers to help keep their 22 projects running.

To say thank you to their volunteers Caritas held a gathering last weekend. It was a chance to join together in celebration and appreciation of the many hours that are given up for free and spent in the service of those in need.

Without the dedication of our ever growing army of volunteers, we would not be able to continue to keep our services running. We would like to thank each and every one of them for all they do.
