Laudato Si Centre Enters Next Stage of its Journey as Planning Permission Submitted
Wednesday 21st October 2020The Laudato Si Centre at Wardley Hall has entered the next stages of its journey as planning permission has been submitted to Salford City Council’s Planning Department in a bid to launch the first phase of building at the site.
The completion of the first phase will see a converted reception area with the hopes of being able to welcome the Centre’s first visitors in time.
The Laudato Si Centre is an ambitious multi-phase project which will create a space for parishioners, school children and organisations across the Diocese of Salford to take practical action to tackle climate change.
All buildings and conversions at the Laudato Si Centre will be completed to be as eco-friendly and sustainable as possible. Initially, it is hoped visitors to the site will be able to explore the walled garden which is home to beehives, greenhouses, and a sensory wild garden, all designed to be accessible to people of all ages and abilities.
The Centre was created following Pope Francis’s challenge in Laudato Si for us all to care for our common home. The encyclical explores the interconnectedness of all things, highlighting the importance of a care for all of creation and encouraging all people to undertake an ecological conversion.
Bishop John said: “There is no doubt that we are becoming much more aware of the damage that we have done, and are continuing to inflict, on the Earth, our common home and I am pleased that we are moving on to the next step in our journey to open the Laudato Si Centre to visitors.
“The Centre will be a place for practical action, rooted in prayer and a place that we can learn about our environment and how we can live more simply. We hope that it will encourage the local community, schools and parishes to transfer some of the ideas on display into their own communities, helping to build a better world for future generations.”
Lisa Heywood, Project Manager at the Diocese of Salford, added: “This next step is a really exciting one and we hope that through the Laudato Si Centre, the Diocese of Salford will be able to become a flagship for effective action of climate change.”
