Pope Francis tells young people – ‘Do not be afraid’

Sunday 25th March 2018

As we celebrate Palm Sunday each diocese around the world are asked to celebrate the 33rd World Youth Day. In his message to young people, Pope Francis chose the theme:  Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God (Lk 1: 30).

It is the second Message that the Pope has addressed to the young during the journey of preparation for WYD in Panama, which will take place from 22 to 27 January 2019. The Holy Father wanted the young people to be accompanied by the Virgin Mary in this spiritual pilgrimage.

Last year’s Message was focused on the words of the Magnificat: “He Who is mighty has done great things for me” (Lk 1: 49), and next year’s will reflect on Mary’s answer to the angel: “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word” (Lk 1: 38).

2018 is an important year for the youth in the Church, the next Synod of Bishops (October 2018) will meet to discuss Young people, faith and vocational discernment. The Synod is hoping to reflect on the situations in which the new generations live, on their life of faith and on the way in which they arrive at their fundamental decisions, which will forge their future and that of humanity. You can find out more about the Synod here.

Here in the Diocese we continue to see the youth events go from strength to strength and we are looking forward to more fantastic events in 2018. Including the youth sleep out and Pentecost celebration.

Our regular youth event, Reignite Young Adult Mass, takes place on the third Sunday of the Month at 5.30pm at St John Bosco. The next date will be 15th April.  Reignite is an opportunity to experience our faith as fun, engaging and transformative. Come along for great speakers, guest homilists, our young adults music ministry, reunion with friends and social time.

And while 2018 is proving to be a busy year we have exciting plans for February 2019 with a Youth Pilgrimage to Rome!
