Relic of St Bernadette Visits SalfordSalford Cathedral, 250 Chapel St, Salford M3 5LE
Tuesday 20th September 2022
Throughout 2022, a relic of St Bernadette will travel from the Upper Basilica in Lourdes, crossing the English Channel to begin a much-anticipated tour of the UK. The relic, a section of St Bernadette’s thigh bone, will visit every Catholic cathedral across the country. Salford Cathedral will host the relic from the 20-22 September 2022.
After the success of the tour of relics of St Thérèse of Lisieux in 2009, we’re very excited to bring a part of Lourdes to Salford. This is a great opportunity for Catholics across the Diocese of Salford to come together to venerate the remains of a beloved saint and will be particularly significant for those who are unable to travel to Lourdes in person.
Canon Christopher Thomas, General Secretary of the UK Conference of Catholic Bishops, explained that the shrine in Lourdes approached the UK bishops to offer the tour: “The bishops saw this as not only something that will remind us of the importance of pilgrimage in our lives and the importance of the place of Lourdes in the life of many Catholics and dioceses in this country, but it will remind us of the centrality of the lives of the saints because this always points us to that greater degree of virtue that we are called to in our living of the Catholic faith.”
More information will be provided about the visit in the coming months.
