RIP Canon Paul Mitcheson Funeral Details

We are sorry to share the news that Canon Paul Mitcheson has died suddenly at Little Sisters of the Poor in Longsight.

Canon Mitcheson was in his eighty fourth year, the sixtieth year of his Sacred Priesthood.  May he rest in peace.

Paul was born on 6th July 1936 in Hadfield and baptised at St Charles Borromeo, Hadfield on 19th July 1936. He was educated at St. Bede’s College, Manchester.

Paul was accepted as an Ecclesiastical student for the Diocese of Salford in February 1954 and continued at St. Bede’s College, transferring to St Joseph’s College, Upholland in September of that year. Fr Paul Mitcheson was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood at St Charles Borromeo, Hadfield on 12th June 1960.

Fr Mitcheson served the Diocese of Salford in the following appointments:

1960-1970:   St. Mary, Levenshulme           Assistant Priest

1970-1979:   St. Anne, Ancoats                  Assistant Priest and Chaplain to St. Gregory’s Grammar School, Ardwick                                    

1979-1982:   St. Vincent, Openshaw          Parish Priest

1982-1988:   St. Thomas of Canterbury, Hr Broughton    Parish Priest

1988-2012:   St. Wilfrid, Longridge           Parish Priest

Canon Paul Mitcheson was elected to the Cathedral Chapter in 2006.

At Easter in 2012 Canon Paul retired, residing as Pastor Emeritus at St Joseph’s in Longsight. In December 2015 he moved to Cathedral House and then to Little Sisters of the Poor in August 2018.

Canon Mitcheson’s body will be received into The Cathedral of St John the Evangelist, Salford  for concelebrated Mass at 7:00pm on Wednesday 7th August.

Bishop Brain will celebrate the Requiem Mass at the Cathedral on Thursday 8th August at 12:10pm.
