RIP Fr Bernard McGarry Obituary Notice

We are sorry to inform you of the sad news that Fr Bernard McGarry died peacefully on 24 July 2020 after a recent illness.

Bernard was born on 19th September 1931 in Oldham and baptised at St Patrick’s, Oldham on 11th October 1931. He attended the St Patrick’s elementary school and St Bede’s College, Manchester.

Bernard was accepted as an Ecclesiastical student for the Diocese of Salford in September 1946 and continued at St Bede’s, transferring to St Cuthbert’s College, Ushaw in 1949. Fr Bernard McGarry was ordained to the Priesthood at The Cathedral Church of St John, Salford on 17th July 1955. Following his ordination Fr Bernard continued his studies at Cambridge University.

Fr McGarry served the Diocese of Salford in the following appointments:

1960-1960:     Teaching Practice, Salford Grammar School

1960-1969:     St. Bede’s College, Manchester, and Editor of the Harvest 1967-1971

1969-1971:     Chaplain to Sedgley Park Training College, Prestwich, Manchester

1971-1974:     Holy Rosary Fitton Hill, Oldham as Assistant Priest

1974-2006:     St. Chad’s, Cheetham Hill as Parish Priest

Fr Bernard retired in 2006.

Respecting Fr Bernard’s instructions, his funeral will be conducted privately. At a later date we will hold a memorial Mass.
