RIP Fr Jim Culkin

It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of Fr Jim Culkin who died peacefully this morning at the Little Sisters of the Poor.

Please remember him in your prayers. May he rest in peace.

James was born on 21st January 1927 in Radcliffe and was baptised on 30th January 1927 at Ss Mary and Philip, Radcliffe. He was educated at St Bede’s College in Manchester.

James was accepted as an Ecclesiastical student for the Diocese of Salford in May 1943 and continued at St Bede’s for a further two years, transferring to St Cuthbert’s College, Ushaw in September 1945. Fr James Culkin was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood at The Cathedral Church of St John, Salford on 22nd July 1951.

Fr Culkin served the Diocese of Salford in the following appointments:

1951-1952:      St. Winifred’s, Heaton Mersey                      Assistant Priest

1952-1956:      Ss. Peter and Paul, Bolton                           Assistant Priest

1956-1958:      Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Blackley            Assistant Priest

1958-1959:      St. Anne’s, Crumpsall                                  Assistant Priest

1959-1969:      St. Joseph’s, Halliwell, Bolton                      Assistant Priest

1969-1994:      St. Joseph’s, Halliwell, Bolton                      Parish Priest

Fr Culkin retired in 1994, he moved to the Little Sisters of the Poor Home in December 2016.

Fr Culkin’s body will be received into the Chapel at Little Sisters of the Poor for concelebrated Mass at 5.00pm on Tuesday 4th September.

Bishop John will celebrate the Requiem Mass at Little Sisters on Wednesday 5th September at 12:00noon followed by burial at Radcliffe Cemetery.
