RIP Fr John Laide Obituary

We are sorry to share the sad news that Fr John Laide died peacefully on 14 October in Co Kerry.

Fr Laide was in his eighty seventh year, the sixty fourth year of his Sacred Priesthood.  May he rest in peace.

John was born on 11th November 1933 in Ballydwyer, Ballymacelligott, Tralee County Kerry and baptised at St Brendan’s, Ballymacelligott on 12th November 1933. He was educated at St. Brendan’s College, Killarney and St. Patrick’s College, Carlow.

John was accepted as an Ecclesiastical student for the Diocese of Salford in March 1952 and continued at St. Patrick’s College. Fr John Laide was ordained to the Priesthood at St Patrick’s College, Carlow on 8th June 1957.

Fr Laide served the Diocese of Salford in the following appointments:

1957-1958:     Holy Family, Kirkholt Rochdale providing Supply for 6 months

1958-1965:     St. Ethelbert’s, Bolton as Assistant Priest

1965-1966:     St. Peter’s, Mill Hill Blackburn as Assistant Priest

1966-1967:     St. Anne’s, Crumpsall Manchester as Assistant Priest

1967-1969:     St. Joseph’s, Heywood as Assistant Priest

1969-1983:     St. Teresa’s, Irlam as Assistant Priest and then as Parish Priest from 1974

1983-1990:     St. Joseph’s, Blackburn as Parish Priest

1990-1998:     St. Margaret Mary’s, New Moston as Parish Priest

Fr John retired in December 1998 and returned to his home town of Ballymacelligott, County Kerry.

In line with current government guidelines, Fr John’s funeral took place with only close family present on Saturday 17th October although the Requiem Mass was live-streamed and many more people were able to join in.

Fr John was laid to rest in Rath Cemetery, Tralee.
