Welcoming our new Head of Environment

In early November, the diocese welcomed its new Head of Environment, Dr Emma Gardner.

She joins the Diocese of Salford from the University of Manchester, where she held the position of Head of Environmental Sustainability for over eight years.

Prior to the University, Emma was a Regional Director with the international consultancy AECOM, working on national and international sustainability projects.

Emma has a PhD in Environmental Sustainability from The University of Salford and brings over 25 years of experience to the role.

Working closely with Bishop John, who is Environment Lead for the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, Emma will lead transformation in keeping with Laudato Si while providing strategic leadership to support environmental practices across our diocese and beyond.

Emma will also manage the flagship Laudato Si Centre, an exciting initiative which based at Wardley Hall.  She said: “I am delighted to be working with the Diocese of Salford to build on the good work already happening. It’s a great year to start in this role, on the fifth anniversary year of the publication of Laudato Si’.

“There is real opportunity for the Diocese to play its part in addressing the climate and ecological crisis, and the Laudato Si Centre will be at the heart of this as a space where we can learn about the environment and work together to take action.”

Chief Operating Officer at the Diocese, Pauline Morgan, added: “We are thrilled to have Emma on board in this exciting new role which will help us to continue in our diocesan challenge of responding to the call to care for our common home.

“Emma has a wealth of experience which will enable her to provide strategic leadership on sustainability which we can put into practice across the diocese, working in partnership with our parishes, clergy and parishioners.”
